The City of Johannesburg launched the 28th Edition of the Arts Alive International Arts Festival on the 09 September 2020 igniting excitement in the creative industries. This year the entire festival is going digital and will be presented to a virtual audience for the first time in its 28 year history. The Festival has a great line up of events that are set to mesmerize audiences. This year the festival has designed an exciting series of webinars and workshops that will be set to tackle a number of pertinent issues within the creative industries.
Webinar on “Perspectives on the Visual Art Market Platforms”- 17 September 2020
The webinar themed “Perspectives on the Visual Arts Market Platforms”, shall be a facilitated discussion featuring experts on the Visual Market that will include Mr. Attila Ledenyi – Director of the Art Market Budapest; Ms. Vesna Latinovic – Gallerist from Serbia; Mr. Mandla Sibeko – Founder Director of FNB Art Joburg and facilitated by Mr. Vuyisile Mshudulu – Director – Arts, Culture and Heritage. The webinar shall seek to share important lessons on the operations of the Visual Arts Market and empower artists on how to approach both the domestic and international market platforms,
The expected outcome for this webinar would be valuable insights on how local visual artists can position themselves for the global visual arts market. It is through such initiatives that Joburg based and indeed South African artists can improve their market share of the multi-billion dollar industry. The world is looking more and more towards Africa for the consumption of Visual Arts and it is an opportune time for local artists to engage with the global market.

The webinar themed “The Meaning and Direction of the Arts in the Post Covid19 Era” will be an open, incisive and reflective discussion featuring some of the greatest thinkers in the creative industries such as Vuyani Gregory Maqoma; Monageng Motshabi; Napo Masheane; Mpho Molepo and facilitated by Vuyisile Mshudulu
With the arts having been one of the hardest hit sectors of the economy but also most disrupted socio-spiritual function. The creation and creative processes of artists are highly influenced by environmental factors and the experiences of the Creatives themselves. There has also been a great outcry for relief exposing the reliance of artists and other practitioners within the arts on funding, grants and economic opportunities. The webinar will reflect on whether artists had any form of readiness for the disruptive nature of Covid19?
The webinars will be streamed live and free to view on the Arts Alive website and Facebook page on the 17 and 22 September 2020 respectively @ 13:00. All curators, collectors, gallerists, writers, art critics, art dealers and art practitioners are invited to participate in the webinar so as to enrich the discussion.
Workshop on “Preserving Arts, Heritage and the Culture of Music”- 28 September 2020
A workshop on “Preserving Arts, Heritage and the Culture of Music” will be facilitated by Billy Monama a guitarist, composer and band leader. His musical journey comprises of performances at a number of important events as a band leader such as the; Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival, Collaborative performance with US saxophonist Dave Koz, Collaboration with Denise Jannah – Singer, Actor & Educator (Netherlands), Promusica Theatre’s Summer Jazz & Blues Weekend, Cape Town International Jazz Festival and many more others.
The workshop will focus on South African heritage music styles such as Marabi, African Jazz, Kwela, Mbaqanga, Maskanda, as well as the basics of music business. The workshop will be streamed on the 28th September 2020 @ 13:00.
