Kaizer Chiefs have announced the signing of long-term target Thabo Cele after he was released by his Russian club, FC Fakel Voronezh.
Cele (28) has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with Chiefs, which includes an option for an additional year.
“Kaizer Chiefs are delighted to announce a further addition to their squad with the acquisition of experienced midfielder, Thabo Cele,” the club stated.
Cele’s transfer aligns with his agreement with his former Russian club, which stipulated that he would only join a South African team. The decision to release him stemmed from his need to be closer to his family due to a health issue affecting a family member, ensuring he would not play for another overseas team during this transition.
Renowned for his abilities as a deep-lying defensive midfielder, Cele also excels in a box-to-box role.
The Durban-born star has long been a target for Chiefs and could make his debut against Orlando Pirates over the weekend [01 February at FNB Stadium in a league tie].
Chiefs announced a further addition to their squad with the acquisition of Congolese international, Glody Makabi Lilepo from French club Valenciennes FC and Tashreeq Morris from Supersport United.
Morris has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract that will keep him at Chiefs until 30 June 2027. This move is part of a strategic swap deal, which will see striker Christian Saile head the other way.
