The award-winning DJ Themba "Maphorisa" Sekowe has been granted bail of R4000 after he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend, Thuli Phongolo.

Maphorisa appeared at the Ranburg magistrate court today facing assault charges after he spent a night at Sandton police station.

The court heard that the complaint, "Thuli Phongolo, has issued a withdrawal statement but the Magistrate told the accused that bail conditions remain effective until the charges are officially withdrawn."

According to Sunday World, Maphorisa got hold of Thuli's neck and dragged her to the balcony of her flat on Sunday.

The publication reports that the actress, who is his girlfriend, told the police the fight ensued when she confronted the DJ about a squabble that transpired between them at a gig on Saturday night.

"I confronted him so that we can talk about our argument, which happened the previous night during his gig. He held me and took me to the balcony, and grabbed me aggressively by my neck," Thuli said in a statement.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said Phongolo was in court and agreed that he be granted bail.

"The case was remanded to 14 June 2023 for Sekowe to lodge representations to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) , in light of the withdrawal statement that has been filed by the complainant."

Attempts to get comments from Phongolo and DJ Maphorisa, as well as their management, were unsuccessful at the time of publishing this article.
