Television presenter and rapper Molemo "Jub Jub" Maarohanye handed himself over to police in Johannesburg on Thursday after a warrant of arrest was issued for him.

Gauteng police spokesperson Mavela Masondo says, "Police can confirm that Maarohanye handed himself over to the police in Brixton on Thursday after a warrant of arrest was issued against him."

He appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on charges of attempted murder, rape, and assault on Thursday afternoon and has been granted R10 000 bail.

Maarohanye's legal team had initially requested for bail to be set at R1 000, but the court felt that the amount was too low for the magnitude of charges against him.

It is not clear how and when the rapper, known for his popular Moja Love show Uyajola 99, committed the offences.

Fullview understands Jub Jub's arrest emanates from a case opened by a well-known celebrity and TV star.

Previously actor and TV personality Amanda du Pont accused Jub Jub of rape and attempted murder.

"I was raped, physically and emotionally abused for two years by Jub Jub. The only thing I did wrong was keep quiet. But that ends here. I will not be publicly ridiculed by this criminal. Him and Mac G saw it fit to drag my name on their podcast for clout at the cost of amplifying a Gender Based Violence Case,[sic]" Amanda captioned the 18-minute video.

She made the shock revelation in an Instagram video in response to allegations made by Jub Jub on a recent episode of Podcast and Chill with MacG (Macgyver Mukwevho), which premiered on Channel O on Wednesday.

Jub Jub was sentenced to 25 years in jail for murder, attempted murder and three related offences in 2012. The murder conviction was overturned in 2014, and he was released on parole in 2017 after serving four years, one month and one day of his reduced 10-year sentence.

Following the release of the video, media personality Masechaba Khumalo also accused Jub Jub of rape, tweeting: "I believe @AmandaDupont. Molemo Maarohanye (Jub Jub) raped me too."

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), one of the complainants opened a case of rape in February last year, and alleged the incidents happened between 2006 and 2009 – while she was in a relationship with him.

"She decided to approach the police following Maarohanye's degrading comments about her on a podcast,” said the NPA.

"After seeing her speaking out about her ordeal on social media, more women decided that it was time to come forward and tell their stories."

The matter will return to court on August 24.

TV channel Moja Love said it will monitor the progress in the case against Uyajola/99 host and "allow the law to take its course".
