Eskom has announced it will be reducing load shedding to stage 1 on Sunday as there has been a recovery in generation reserves, however, stage 2 power cuts will continue as planned until 11 pm on Saturday.

Due to recovery in the emergency generation reserves and significant progress, load shedding will be reduced to Stage 1 from 6:00 until 23:00 on Sunday.

The power utility said Sunday’s bout of load shedding will run from 6 am until 11 pm.

South Africans have been saddled with the rolling power cuts this weekend after days of warning that the system is constrained.

The power utility also requested the people of South Africa to continue using electricity sparingly in order to help limit the impact of load shedding.

Also on Friday, Eskom together with the special Investigating Unit (SIU) managed to recover funds of more than R1 billion from ABB South Africa.

The agreement outlined that ABB South Africa would pay Eskom R1.56 billion in full and final settlement of an overpayment dispute relating to a contract unlawfully awarded through corrupt means for work at the Kusile Power Station.

While Head of the SIU Andy Mothibi and Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter both said they were delighted, it wasn’t long before the dreaded news of load shedding came a knocking again. A few hours after some good news regarding Eskom, load shedding Stage 2 was announced and despite it being reduced to Stage 1.
