Foreign-owned shops in Soweto were under siege last night as residents went on a looting spree in about six townships.
Townships that have been affected so far are said to be Zola, Emdeni, Moletsane, White City, Zondi and Rockville.
Police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubele has confirmed the incidents and said that there were no indication yet as to why the looting had started, and further said the police officers on the ground were monitoring the situation.
He said it could not be established yet whether anyone had been injured in the looting or if any arrest had been made.
