Graeme Smith has signed a three month contract with Cricket South Africa to be its temporary Director of Cricket.
The former Proteas captain agreed terms after a hectic few days of talks between himself and the organisation which has been engulfed in controversy over the last few months culminating the suspension of chief executive Thabang Moroe.
Smith could not commit to longer than three months as he’s already signed a deal to commentate in the Indian Premier League next year.
The Director of Cricket role, firsted drawn up by CSA following the 2015 Cricket World Cup, is an all encompassing one in the occupant will be responsible for all national teams – mens, womens and juniors – and the appointment for head coach/team directors for each of those sides. The Director of Cricket will also oversee the appointment of a panel of selectors, a strategy for the senior mens team for the 2023 World Cup, and the structures domestically that feed into the national team.
For now, Smith’s sole focus will be the Proteas team, who tackle England in a four-Test series starting on Boxing Day at SuperSport Park.
