Joburg Theatre in association with the City of Johannesburg entities; Joburg City Parks and Zoo and City Power are excited to announce the brand new annual Joburg Zoo Festival of Lights featuring an delightful collection of illuminated life-size animal characters offering classical, harmonious entertainment, food and craft night market for visitors at the Joburg Zoo from 1st December 2019 to 5th January 2020.
Open from 7pm to 10pm daily in the evenings except on Mondays, patrons can enjoy a tranquil walk in the Zoo on a designated lit route away from the animals enclosures under trees decorated in captivating lights.
“We are working closely with the animal welfare and conservation staff to ensure that the decibels for entertainment and lights are monitored to ensure that there is no discomfort to the animals at all times”, said Nonhlanhla Sifumba, MMC of Community Development at The City of Johannesburg.
The Joburg Zoo Festival of Lights will kick off with a classical performance of The Nutcracker by Joburg Ballet at the Bandstand at the Zoo from the 1st to 8th Dec 2019. The entertainment thereafter will vary on a daily basis offering entertainment and an outdoor nightlife experience for families by providing an upmarket festival of lights paired with exceptionally exquisite flavours of food and beverage offerings for all ages.
“Place-making in the City to afford residents a unique after-hours experience in the build-up to the festive season, is vital to nurture healthy minds and vibrant communities“, stated the excited Managing Director of Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo, Mr Bryne Maduka.
Residents are invited to support the annual event and to also explore during the day the nocturnal side of Joburg Zoo that boasts the Big Five on a sprawling 54 hectare site with animals from across all continents including rare species of animals from the Amazon.
“After attending the Garden of Lights in Berlin a few years back, and seeing the wild life lights concept that happens annually at the Zoo, we thought we could make it a festive treat by using fascinating LED and energy efficient lights to make our very own night market experience at the Joburg Zoo, a treat for all ages”, said Xoliswa Nduneni–Ngema, Chief Executive Officer at Joburg City Theatres.
