Rise Against Hunger Africa (RAH) formerly known as Stop Hunger Now Southern Africa (SHN SA) Established in the USA in 1998, SHN-SA now known as RAH Africa is an international organisation that co-ordinates the distribution of food and other life-saving aid around the world. Rise Against Hunger Africa was established in September 2009 and has branches in Gauteng, Western Cape, Eastern Cape and now also in Kwa-Zulu Natal.
RAH Africa is a volunteer based organisation which hosts meal packaging events and then distributes the meals through our outcomes based food support programme. Rise Against Hunger Africa offers a social investment opportunity to provide fully balanced nutritional meals for children necessary for their holistic development. We depend on passionate, active volunteers for meal packaging events and food distribution. Our ECD Connect Programme has solid, measurable results and restores hope for hungry children. We also partner with organisations to provide quality learning and to build the infrastructure of the Early Learning Facilities we work with.
RAH AFRICA PROGRAMME RAH Africa’s meal packaging programme is a volunteer-based programme that utilises volunteers to package highly nutritious dehydrated meals comprised of rice, soya, vegetables and 23 essential vitamins and minerals. The meals are easy to store and transport. One packet can feed 6 adults or 10 children. Each box contains 36 packets, 216 meals. The meals also have a shelf life of one year and only require water and a basic stovetop to cook. Rise Against Hunger Africa has over 300 ECD facilities that it is working with currently directly.
ECD Connect Program Outline: Before taking on any ECD’s, RAH Africa will send out a field officer who will conduct a baseline assessment. This will help us establish what the needs of the facility are and what improvements and outcomes our partnership with them can achieve. In a nutshell, our outcomes based programme works on the following principle. – For every 20 children attending the ECD, we will supply one box of meals, which is sufficient for 3 – 5 servings per child per week for a month. This will also create a saving of between R150 – R200 per month. We will then guide the Principle of the crèche to spend the savings on areas which were identified from the baseline assessment. This might include a first aid kit, fire extinguisher, teacher training etc. Some of the minimum requirements and criteria are: The crèche must be un-registered. I.e. Not receiving a grant from DSD The school fees must be R250.00 or less The crèche must not have an existing donor which is donating food. The ultimate goal, is that we can assist the ECD’s to meet the standards that the Department of Social Development requires and be able to officially register. This will then entitle them to obtain a grant.
