Serena Williams took the first step toward a potential record-tying 24th Grand Slam title at the Australian Open by winning her first-round match.

Serena, 38, closed out her 6-0, 6-3 victory over 18-year-old Anastasia Potapova of Russia.

Williams, the No. 8 seed, notched 24 winners and 16 unforced errors in the win.

Meanwhile 15-year-old American Coco Gauff notched her second straight victory in a Grand Slam event over 39-year-old Venus Williams, a 2017 finalist in Australia against Serena.

Playing in her first Australian Open main draw, Gauff beat Venus, 7-6(5), 6-3 in a rematch of their first-round match at Wimbledon, won by the youngster.
