Mamelodi Sundowns blew an opportunity to go top of the Absa Premiership table when they were beaten 1-0 by Baroka FC at Dobsonville Stadium.
Following a loss for title rivals Kaizer Chiefs earlier in the day,Sundowns could have gone three points clear with two games to play and now they remain level on 53 points at the top of the table.
However, the result is a major boost for Baroka, who move up two places to 13th on the log and open up a two-point gap to the relegation playoff.
Baroka claimed the lead in the 20th minute, with Ananias Gebhardt rising highest to meet a corner kick and head his side into a lead.
Sundowns threatened to go level nine minutes before halftime off Lyle Lakay’s left-footed free-kick from the far side, but the delivery narrowly missed the far corner of Ayanda Dlamini’s goal.
Lakay launched another threat down the visitors throat with a pin-point free-kick, but Baroka defended deep to consolidate their lead while Gaston Sirino had a late strike that went over the crossbar by Dlamini.
The teams will return to Absa Premiership action on Wednesday 2 September, with Sundowns away to Polokwane City at Loftus Versfeld Stadium and Baroka visiting SuperSport United at the Bidvest Stadium.
