Al Ahly have safely progressed to the semi-finals following a 2-1 victory over second-division side Abo Qir Fertilizers.

Minnows Abo Qir had a fairytale run in the Egypt Cup, knocking out top tier teams Entag and Haras El-Hodood to reach the quarter-finals of the competition.

Despite getting sent out of the cup by Al Ahly on Saturday, Abo Qir defied the odds again as they managed to make the Egyptian champions struggle to score more than twice.

It didn’t take Pitso Mosimane’s men long to break the deadlock as veteran Walid Soliman fired his side in the lead after just 15 minutes.

10 minutes later, Soliman doubled Al Ahly’s lead from the spot as Ibrahim Reio was sent off after receiving two yellow cards inside three minutes.

Against the run of play, Guinean forward Cirva Lah tapped in Hany El-Sayed’s low cross to score a historic goal for his club in the 39th minute.

Al Ahly had a couple of chances to score at least two more goals through Aliou Badji and Mohamed Magdy Afsha, but Abo Qir’s goalkeeper Mohamed Talaat produced a MOTM performance to keep the score at 2-1.

The Reds will now face Ittihad of Alexandria in the semi-finals of the Egypt Cup on December 1, with the final being played four days later.

However, before that, Al Ahly will face arch-rivals Zamalek in the CAF Champions League final on November 27.
