Mamelodi Sundowns have secured a 2-0 victory against Botswana outfit Jwaneng Galaxy 2-0 in their CAF Champions League first round first leg.
Sundowns took an early lead in the 10th minute through Mothobi Mvala, who neatly placed his right-footed effort into the back of the net after Lyle Lakay did well to pick him out inside the box.
Galaxy best chances in the match came in the first half, when they were denied a penalty in the 21st minute as Khuliso Mudua clattered into an attacker inside his own box but the referee waved play-on.
The Brazilians doubled their lead just seconds into the second half as Peter Shalulile pounced on a loose ball after a mistake from the Galaxy defence.
The glamour tie was a battle of champions as both sides won their respective domestic leagues last season.
Galaxy's first ever Premier League triumph proved a slightly anti-climatic affair. Leading Township Rollers by a single point, the local outfit were crowned champions with ten games still remaining.
This was after the BFA controversially ruled the BPL would not resume due to Covid-19 and thus the log was declared complete.
However a 1-0 victory over Morupule Wanderers saw Galaxy leapfrog Rollers, Orapa United and Security Systems after all three lost on what turned out to be the final game of the season.
It meant Galaxy qualified for the Champions League for the first time in club’s six-year history.
The Brazilians will host the return leg in the new year, a few days after facing Orlando Pirates in a DStv Premiership encounter at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on January 2.
Meanwhile Sundowns have confirmed they have signed five-year contracts with two academy graduates, midfielders Siphesihle Mkhize and Musawenkosi Mdhuli, who are both now officially members of the first team.
