Full time: Japan 38 Samoa 19.

Japan took a giant step towards the quarter-finals of the 2019 Rugby World Cup after overwhelming Samoa 38-19 in Toyota.

They won with a crucial bonus point claimed with a last-gasp try for star winger Kotaro Matsushima, while defeat means Samoa's quarter-final hopes effectively ended despite their best performance of the tournament.

Japan's first appearance in a World Cup quarter-final is not yet guaranteed because the hosts could still finish below both Ireland and Scotland in a tight pool A.
