The 27th Joburg International Arts Alive Festival 2019 Kicks-Off

On Sunday, 01 September 2019 the Joburg International Arts Alive Festival will host the Jazz on the Lake concert at the Zoo Lake to celebrate the spring season and Heritage month.

As part of  27th Joburg International Arts Alive Festival 2019 a number of activities are planned citywide for the entire September 2019 to mark City’s Heritage Month.

The Jazz on the Lake concert will cater for a diverse audience making this event an annual pilgrim for young and old and a highlight on South African cultural calendar. 

The Jazz on the Lake line-up includes an exciting range of diverse artists as follows:

 

Vusi Nova: The past few years has seen Vusi Nova reaching the height of his career. The double platinum sensation won Best Afro Pop Album, Best Afro Album and Best Male at the South African Afro Music Awards 2017. Vusi Nova has collaborated with some of the biggest names in SA music such as Zahara, Kelly Khumalo, 047,Bongani Radebe, Ntando to name a few.Jazz on the Lake audiences can look forward to an amazing performance featuring a surprise guest.

 

TRC featuring Afrika Mkhize: Formed in 2007 TRC fuses imported sounds and export their own flavour improvising around the melody. For this performance TRC will be collaborating with well-renowned multi-award winning musical director and pianist Afrika Mkhize. Mandla Mlangeni on trumpet, Keenan Ahrends on guitar, Nicholas Williamson  bass and Claude Cozens on the drums.

 

Michel Herrera and the Madre Tierra Band : Michel hails from Havana, Cuba, developing his own unique style of classical and popular music combined. He’s unique style won him an award at the international JoJazz competition in 2005 & 2006. He has performed at the best venues in Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland, Russia, Holland, Spain and Canada and has worked with the likes of Bobby Carcacess, Wynton Marsalis, Luis Chicoy, Beatriz Marquez and more. 

 

Bucie: One of the best female vocalists in South African house music.  Multi-award winning Kimberly-born Busisiwe Nkomo has collaborated with internationally acclaimed House superstars like Black Coffee and Louie Vega. In her extensive repertoire, Busi has collaborated with the likes of Kwesta,Yemi Alade, Mr Kamera, Black Motion, Mpumi, Mobi Dixon and a whole lot more.

 

Sjava: Blending hip-hop, R&B and African pop styles while singing and rapping in isiZulu. Sjava writes emotionally resonant sounds. He solidified his commercial claim breaking through with his gold-selling debut album, 2016’s Isina Muva, but his fame spread internationally when he was featured on the Black Panther soundtrack in 2018. Black Panther soundtrack Viewers’ Choice award for Best International Act at the 2018 BET Awards.

 

Tamy Moyo: Thamsanqa Moyo is a Zimbabwean singer, a songwriter and guitarist known mostly for her 2016 song Ndibereke. At an age of 13 she was already sharing the stage with International artists like Joe Thomas and performing with local artists like Oliver Mtukudzi, Ba Shupi and Alexio Kawara. Tamy has performed at the largest festivals internationally, HIFA, Shoko Festival and Madison Square Garden in New York.

 

Ami Faku: Born and raised in the Eastern Cape – Ami Faku is an Afro Pop sensation. With a touch of her Xhosa heritage, was a Top 16 singer on The Voice SA (Season 2) with a unique and global sound. Ami Faku has worked with artists such as Ntsika Fana (The Soil), Jethro Tait and David (Kiffness) and many more.

 

Billy Manama: is a Guitarist, Composer, Band-leader, Founder & Director of the Grazroots Project, was born in Mokopane, Mahwelereng in Limpopo where he inherited a rich musical culture that combined traditional ethnic sounds with those from western jazz styles. He has performed at the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival and Cape Town International Jazz Festival with the likes of Dave Koz, Themba Mkhize, Andile Yenana, Dorothy Masuka, Abdullah Ibrahim, Sibongile Khumalo and many more.

 

Ark of Arts: A development band from the Vaal that will be performing for their second time at Jazz on the Lake, winners of the Puisano Jazz band competition in 2016 and crowd pleasers of note. They have since performed at One Entertainment, Crossover Newtown Festival and Emerald Festival.

 

The concert is free of charge and it sets to start from 10h00 to 17h00.

Jazz on the Lake concert will include road closures which will be implemented in and around the Parkview area, only residents and officially accredited personnel will be allowed through with their accreditation.

However, the public is encouraged to make use of the FREE Park ‘n Ride buses and minibuses on the day from 09h00 am to 15h00 and will be transporting the public to Zoo Lake back from 17h00 to 19h00. There will be ample free parking made available from 3 locations around Joburg; namely Metro Centre on Loveday in Braamfontein, Marks Park in Emmarentia and Killarney Mall.

Rea Vaya  will run additional buses for Soweto residents from Maponya Mall to Braamfontein at standard rates.

No weapons, drugs, glass bottles or alcohol will be allowed and no cooler boxes bigger than 20kgs will be allowed. Food and drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) will be for sale at the beer garden at affordable prices.

City of Joburg welcomes all Johannesburg residents and visitors to join the colourful celebration and much anticipated family friendly jazz concert.
