Luyanda Botha who confessed to the rape and murder of UCT student Uyinene Mrwetyana has been handed three life sentences in terms of a plea and sentencing agreement heard in the Western Cape High Court.

He was charged with two counts of rape in addition to a murder charge, as well as one count of defeating the ends of justice.

In August, he lured the 19-year-old UCT student to the Clareinch Post Office, where he raped her and bludgeoned her to death. He then hid her body in a safe and the next day tried to dispose of it in Khayelitsha.

Mrwetyana's family were in court as proceedings continued, including the graphic details of Botha's plea.
