A fire broke out at a substation in Eldorado Park, south of Johannesburg in the early hours of Friday morning.
Johannesburg emergency services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi says the fire erupted at Extension 5 at around 5am.
"Yes, we can confirm that in the early hours of this morning at 5:30 we got a call at the Eldorado substation Extension 5 about a fire."
Mulaudzi says the blaze took firefighters an hour to extinguish.
City Power technicians are expected on scene to assess the damage.
"At this stage the fire has been extinguished. We just roped in our fire safety inspectors to check the integrity of the structure. They will be able to give a go-ahead before the technicians can come in.
"The cause of the fire incident is still a subject of investigation. There were no injuries that were reported."
City Power says its working tirelessly to restore power in Mondeor, Naturena, Lenasia and surrounding areas are affected and said the estimated time for restoration (ETR) for Eldorado Park substation can only be determined after the assessment of the extent of the damage.
Johannesburg council Speaker Vasco da Gama also visited the Eldorado Park substation where he received a briefing by the City Power technical team on the extent of the damage.
