Two more men were arrested in Mbombela overnight in connection with the murder of Hillary Gardee.

Mpumalanga police commissioner Lt-Gen Semakaleng Manamela expressed her appreciation for the energy and commitment shown by the team probing the case. So far three suspects have been arrested.

"This is encouraging and as we indicated that there were other people of interest that we were following and interviewing. Through our investigation, which is still proceeding, we were able to come out with information that we fully believe the two are the right suspects" she said.

The two join the 39-year-old suspect arrested on Friday in Schoemansdal (Nkomazi).

"As earlier indicated, more suspects may be arrested as the intensive investigation proceeds into the murder of 28-year-old Hillary Gardee who was laid to rest on Saturday," Manamela said in a statement on Sunday.

Gardee, a 28-year-old IT graduate, was abducted from the Nelspruit Plaza Spar at around 5pm on Friday, 29 April 2022. Passers-by found her lifeless body several days later at the edge of a forest on a deserted stretch of the Sabie road.

She was laid to rest today in Kwamagugu township in Mbombela, where a large contingent of mourners came to bid her farewell.

Hillary's Father, Godrich Gardee, who is the former secretary general of the EFF, also made a moving tribute to his daughter. He spoke of how he and his family had relentlessly searched for Hillary.

"We searched for you in bushes at Kwamagugu. We went to busy streets with your photo. We went to bushes we were sent to. We called out your name at weird hours of the night, thinking you would answer back and we’d rescue you," he said.

He went on to describe the anguish he felt when a call came through that their search had come to an end and he was asked to go to the plantation where Hillary’s body was found.
