Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said on Saturday,there are now 65,736 confirmed coronavirus cases in South Africa as deaths climb to 1,423.

This is up by 3,809 cases from the 61,927 infections on Friday when the country recorded 3,359 new cases.

Mkhize announced 69 new deaths, taking the total up to 1,423, while recoveries increased to 36,850, which translates to a recovery rate of 56%.

Meanwhile the Deputy Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Nkosi Phathekile Holomisa, is in self-isolation after he tested positive for COVID-19.

Government announced on Saturday that the deputy minister was at home and taking all the necessary measures for his recovery.

According to the latest figures published by Johns Hopkins University, 7,751,747 cases have been detected worldwide, with 428,101 deaths and 3,679,339 people now recovered.

Nigeria: 15,181 cases / 399 deaths
South Africa: 65,736 cases / 1,423 deaths
Ghana: 11,118 cases / 48 deaths.

Egypt has confirmed 1,677 new coronavirus cases and 62 deaths, the health ministry said, the highest daily increase for both counts.

In total, the Arab world's most populous country has registered 42,980 cases including 1,484 deaths, the ministry said in a statement.
