45 pilgrims killed in bus crash on the R518, near Mokopane.

A total of 45 pilgrims were killed and several more seriously injured in a bus crash between Marken and Mokopane in Limpopo on Thursday.

Fullview understands their bus went out of control, fell over a bridge and caught fire on the mountain pass.

The pilgrims were travelling from Gaborone, Botswana to Moria outside Polokwane.

The injured, an eight-year-old girl, has been airlifted to hospital.

Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga went to the crash site and expressed her sadness on the bus crash.

"A bus that was pulling a trailer went over the bridge down into the rocky river and it had about 45 occupants only one eight-year-old girl survived she was airlifted to the hospital and these were the people that were travelling from Gaborone Botswana to the church Moria."

"I am sending my heartfelt condolences to the families affected by the tragic bus crash. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. We continue to urge responsible driving at all times with heightened alertness as more people are on our roads this Easter weekend," Chikunga stated.

Chikunga assured the public that a thorough investigation is under way to determine the precise cause of the crash.

The scene was attended to by SAPS Tinmyne and the Limpopo Accident Response Team, who are working tirelessly to manage the aftermath of this tragic event.
