Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding this horrific incident.

The Department of Education in Gauteng spokesperson, Steve Mabona, says MEC Matome Chiloane will visit the crash scene and both schools on Wednesday afternoon.

"Earlier this morning, the department received a distressing report from officials indicating that a private scholar transport mini-bus was involved in a tragic accident in the Kokosi-Wedela area in Merafong, claiming the lives of the 12 learners and their driver.

"The loss of our children is a devastating blow to our community, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased and injured learners."

"Counseling services will be made available to all learners and staff members to help them cope with the emotional aftermath of this tragedy," Mabona added.

Meanwhile the Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, has sent her deep condolences to the families, friends and schooling community of the learners.

"The loss of loved ones is never easy. The loss is markedly acute when it is our children that we have to bury. We offer our heartfelt sympathies to the parents of the children. We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers, hoping that healing and grace locate you. We also wish the learners who were hurt in the accident a full and speedy recovery," said Gwarube.

The DBE said Gwarube was in contact with the Chiloane, to be kept abreast of updates in this matter.
