Twelve people were killed, including a child, and three others injured following a taxi rollover on the D429 Kilmun Road in Underberg, KwaZulu Natal, yesterday afternoon.

ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene at 16h50 to find another private service as well as the Provincial EMS already in attendance. A taxi was found upright; the roof completely ripped off. Several people were found lying scattered around the scene.

On closer inspection, medics found that eleven adult and a two-year-old child had sustained fatal injuries. Nothing could be done for them, and they were declared dead.

Three other patients were assessed and found to have sustained moderate to serious injuries.

The patients were treated and transported by other services to nearby hospitals for further care.

It is understood that the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to roll multiple times and eject the occupants.

Local authorities were on the scene for further investigations.

KwaZulu-Natal premier Sihle Zikalala is expected to meet relatives of the 12 people who died in a horrific taxi accident in the province.

In a statement on Saturday, Zikalala's office said that the crash happened in Kilimon, near Underberg, when the driver of the minibus taxi lost control and rolled down an embankment.

"Our hearts go out to the family who lost their loved ones in this horrific accident. We hope they can find comfort in the Almighty during this difficult time. We also wish those injured a speedy recovery," said Zikalala.
