The Phillipine seismology agency said the quakes measured 5.9 and 5.4 struck a province in the Phillipines and eight people were killed after back-to-back earthquakes struck the northern Philippines this morning. A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck the Batanes archipelago.

About 20 minutes later, a second quake hit the same area near Itbayat at a magnitude of 5.4. The Phillippines is part of the Pacific"Ring of Fire", an arc of intense seismic activity that stretches from quake-prone Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin.
The country's most recent deadly quake occurred in April when at least 11 people were killed and a supermarket collapsed in a 6.3 magnitude tremor that hit a region north of the capital Manila.
