The Democratic Alliance (DA) will hold an urgent federal committee meeting to discuss operations in the City of Johannesburg following the resignation of Mayor Herman Mashaba. He is expected to vacate office on the 27th of November 2019.
Mashaba resigned this morning following the appointment of former DA and Western Cape Premier Helen Zille as party Federal Council chair, a move that is seen as divisive in the party and He had threatened to resign last week if the party was taken over by what he called “right-wing elements”.
He told the public that DA doesn't care about the poor and would rather prioritise the needs of the well-to-do and he also denounced Zille as the emblematic of the party's shift away from progressive politics and a return to white domination.
When He concluded, Maimane stepped up to the podium and praised Mashaba for the work he did in the city.
