Wits SRC appeals for contributions towards Safety Kits for Womxn Students.

In the wake of the brutal rape and murder of UCT student Uyinene Mrwetyana,Leighandre JegelsAyakha Jiyane and so many other victims the Wits University SRC hosted a public interfaith prayer and candle lighting vigil in memory of Uyinene as well as the many victims of gender-based violence (GBV) earlier today at the Great Hall Plaza.

The SRC extend their deepest condolences to the family and friends of Uyinene and the other families and condemn all forms of violence against womxn and children. In a bid to offer some form of protection to the womxn students at Wits University the SRC have developed a Safety Kit which consists of amongst pepper spray, personal alarm, self defense class schedules and Gender Equity details.

The SRC have appealed for sponsorship to purchase and package enough Safety Kits for all the womxn on Wits Campus. Every rand goes some way towards ensuring the safety of Wits students.

“We are pained to have yet another vigil for one of our own. It is extremely important that we as the Wits SRC and as students stand together with the UCT students and students around the country against violence towards women. Your contribution towards purchasing these safety kits for students will be appreciated and will go towards equipping womxn students with some sense of security said Sisanda Mbolekwa, Wits SRC President.”
