Women’s Month Feature: A medical doctor and a sexologist Dr Elna Rudolph.

Dr Elna Rudolph is a Medical Doctor and Sexologist working exclusively in the field of sexual medicine. Having qualified as a medical doctor in 2005 at the University of Pretoria, she has been involved in Sexual Medicine on a full-time basis since 2010.

She is extremely passionate about Sexual Health and all it entails for couples of all walks of life. Her continued interest in the field of Sexual Medicine is demonstrated by her active involvement in various national and international organisations and committees, conducting research, and presenting at both local and global conferences on Sexual Health on an annual basis.

As the founder of My Sexual Health, she also serve as the clinical head of MSH – a multidisciplinary team of Sexual Health Professionals in Pretoria, Johannesburg and Cape Town.  They are an extensive team of Medical and Sexual Healthcare Providers and Sexologists, all registered with the Southern African Sexual Health Association (SASHA) and our applicable professional boards.  She is registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) under the registration number: MP0637742.

In 2009 she obtained a Higher Diploma in Sexual Health and HIV Medicine through the Colleges of Medicine in South Africa, which is the highest attainable Sexual Health qualification in the country. She was surprised to learn that she was the first doctor ever in South Africa to pass this very difficult exam.

In 2010 she obtained a Master’s Degree in Sexual Health through the University of Sydney, Australia, one of a few places in the world where a master’s degree in Sexual Health can be completed in English via distance learning.

She is very proud to have become one of the first doctors to be named a Fellow of the European Committee for Sexual Medicine in 2012.  This is the highest attainable qualification and registration achievable in Sexual Medicine and only a few hundred doctors from around the world hold this prestigious qualification. She was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Council of Sex Education and Parenthood (International) in India during 2014.

She serve as Executive Board member of the Southern African Sexual Health Association (SASHA) and am a member of the Executive Committee for the World Association for Sexual Health (WAS) where she serve as Chair of the Membership Committee and the Regional Secretary for Africa.

She has been invited as plenary speaker at world conferences in Brasil, India and Prague.  Her research has also been presented in the USA, Portugal and various conferences throughout South Africa.

Academic research and writing remains a personal passion and ongoing commitment to both colleagues and the public to produce high quality sexual health related information, and she has written numerous articles, most of which are available on her blog. Some of her most significant achievements has been the co-writing of a chapter in the official textbook of the European Certified Psycho-sexologists and publishing an article on Physiotherapy for Erectile Dysfunction in the International Journal for Sexual Medicine in 2017 (considered widely as the ‘Bible’ for sex-nerds as she likes to call herself).

She has been involved in STI research at the University of Pretoria and contact research on the treatment of Genito-Pelvic Pain/Penetration Disorder in her practice on an ongoing basis.

She is a member of the Southern African HIV Clinician Society and regularly attend meetings to keep her knowledge regarding HIV up to date.

She truly enjoys sharing her knowledge and presenting lectures on Sexual Health.  She still has time in her hectic schedule for charity work and donate her time to the Hanna Charity and Mosaiek Church by speaking about sexual health and providing information sessions to interested communities.

On a personal level, she is an awesome mom to her two miracle daughters Nina Neo and Nandi Mari, and a good wife to her super-supportive husband and favourite travel-buddy, Johann.
