Eskom says that four of its units have gone down overnight, necessitating that load shedding be escalated to stage 2 until further notice.
The group had previously announced its intention to suspend load shedding during the day this weekend.
According to the power utility, the higher stage of load shedding was the result of four units being taken out of service overnight.
Stage 1 loadshedding was expected to last until Sunday.
The power utility gave no details of any changes, instead, it said it would communicate should any major changes occur.
