The murder trial of former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates captain Senzo Meyiwa has been postponed to Monday, 4 March.
This was announced in the North Gauteng High Court on Friday, 16 February.
The state will present its arguments by Friday, 23 February. The defence is expected to file by 1 March.
The adjournment will allow for final arguments to be presented before judgement is delivered.
This comes after the defence has concluded that this is a trial within a trial. The state is expected to present final arguments by Friday, After that, the defence has 5 days to respond.
The trial within a trial is to clarify the admissibility of the confessions of the two accused, Muzi Sibiya and Bongani Ntanzi, in which he accuses the police of violating his rights.Two of the five men accused of murdering the football star signed confessions but have now reneged saying they were assaulted into signing.
Meyiwa was shot at the home of his girlfriend – singer Kelly Khumalo – in October 2014.
It’s been four months since the trial within a trial commenced in the Meyiwa case and 16 state witnesses later, this leg of the matter is nearing its end.
The court has also heard testimony from the two accused – who gave their versions on the witness stand.
Now, both parties will have to prepare to make formal submissions before court and argue on the admissibility of the statements.
