The Department of Health has confirmed that all the Gr 12 learners who were admitted to hospital with suspected food poisoning have been discharged.
A total of 73 of the girls were admitted to Carletonville Hospital, while another one was admitted to a private hospital.
The 42 pupils were taken to Fochville Clinic and the other 32 transported to Kokosi Clinic at about 9am, but after an assessment, the affected pupils were taken to Carletonville District Hospital.
Department spokesperson Motalatale Modiba said the pupils were from Fochville Secondary School, Badirile Secondary School and Wedela Technical School.
He said the pupils, aged between 17 and 20, were part of a matric camp at Fochville Secondary School and had arrived at the school on Tuesday and were expected to go home on Friday.
Modiba added that all learners were evaluated and treated.
This incident follows the recent tragedy in Naledi, Soweto, where five children tragically lost their lives due to suspected food poisoning, with one child still fighting for his life in hospital.
Meanwhile minister of Police Senzo Mchunu said they are working on deploying intelligence to check the compliance of all spaza shops in Gauteng.
“We can’t just leave it to parents or leave it to schools, we just have to do the profile of all these areas and the owners of these businesses while checking each and every incident. Surely we are going to get to the bottom of this and deal with it decisively once and for all.
