SA Police Service (SAPS) in Gauteng have confirmed the arrest of a suspect in connection with the deaths of two uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) members.
The MK Party members were shot and killed on Sunday in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni, during suspected political violence.
One person died at the scene, while the other was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.
A firearm and a knife were recovered at the location of the crime.
“It is reported that two MKP members were shot and killed during a dispute with members affiliated with the ANC at Thwala Section in Katlehong North. One victim died on the scene while the other was declared dead on arrival at a hospital,” said Gauteng provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili.
Muridili confirmed that a firearm and a knife were recovered at the scene.
“The motive for the attack will form part of the investigations. A case involving two counts of murder has been registered and allocated to the provincial serious and violent crimes investigation unit,” said Muridili.
The provincial South African Police Service (Saps) are currently investigating the incident, added Muridili.
The suspect is expected to appear in court soon.
On Sunday, Natjoints chairperson Lieutenant-General Tebello Mosikili said police are investigating 27 cases related to the elections, including the incident of the ballot papers in KwaZulu-Natal.
Mosikili acknowledged the major task at hand of ensuring a safe election period.
“The task at hand is immense but through past experiences of ensuring safe and secure elections, we are confident that we are ready for this next phase.
“We are grateful that thus far our communities and South Africans from all walks of life have continued to display responsible conduct and behaviour.”
A reminder to all political parties that political campaigning ends at midnight on 28 May 2024, should it continue beyond this period, this would be a transgression and contravention of the Electoral Act,” Mosikili said.
