SA Police Service (SAPS) in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) are appealing to the public to help trace suspects wanted for the murders of five people in the province.
Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said, “reports indicated that three men and three women had gone to a homestead that doubles up as a spaza shop when they were ambushed by a group of assailants.”
The incident happened in the early hours of Thursday morning in Muden.
“Three men, aged 22, 24 and 25, were declared dead at the scene. One woman was injured and rushed to hospital, whereas two other women escaped unharmed.
“Police investigations have thus far revealed that the vehicle which the victims were travelling in was reported stolen in Johannesburg,” said Netshiunda.
Updating the media on the ongoing counting of votes in the province, KZN Independent Electoral Commission’s Provincial Electoral Officer, Ntombifuthi Masinga announced another two lives that were lost in two separate incidents.
“We regrettably inform you of two lives that we have become aware of that were lost yesterday (Wednesday) in our province. One of them is a voter who fell off a bakkie that was transporting people to voting stations and was run over by the bakkie.
“We also have a stabbing incident in Bulwer, in the Harry Gwala District, where an altercation happened outside the voting station, which resulted in the stabbing and someone losing their life.
“These are very unfortunate incidences’ that we don’t want happening around elections. The Bulwer accident had nothing to do with the elections. Unfortunately, it happened too close to the perimeter of the voting station.”
The assailants from both incidents are unknown at this stage, and the motives for the killings have not yet been established, added Netshiunda.
