Four wickets by Ottniel Baartman was the main attraction for the Sunrisers Eastern Cape as they dismantled the Pretoria Capitals to win by nine wickets in their Betway SA20 clash in Gqeberha on Monday.
Baartman looked like a man possessed as he claimed four wickets for just 12 runs, helping to dismiss the visiting side for a tournament-record 52 runs in front of an intimate St George’s Park crowd.
Chasing the modest total, the Sunrisers lost the services of Dawd Malan caught by Senuran Muthusamy for a double.
Jordan Hermann and Tom Abell would take their side to 45/1 after the powerplay, sharing an unbeaten 50 from 35 for the second wicket to see their side home with 13.1 overs to spare.
The win sees the Orange Army claim their third win in a row, with the bonus point taking to second spot behind the high-flying Paarl Royals.
Parnell took 1-19 from two overs, while Daryn Dupavillon and Eathan Bosch registered figures of 0-21 and 0-14 respectively from a combined 4.5 overs.
With grey skies above ahead of the start of the match, and the home side choosing to field after winning the toss, Capitals openers Will Jacks and Phil Salt raced to 24 without loss in the third over as they looked to capitalise on the fielding restrictions.
However, the Sunrisers’ pace attack brought a halt to proceedings as Dan Worrall, and Marco Jansen would claim the wickets of Salt (10) and Jacks (12) in consecutive deliveries to to end the fourth over on 26/2.
Things would get worse for the Sky Blues as Worrall dismissed the dangerous Rilee Rossouw for a single, while Ottniel Baartman bowled Colin Ingram, who added one to the total, to leave the Capitals reeling on 29/4 at the end of the powerplay.
Their misery was compounded when Worrall had James Neesham (2) caught on the boundary by Jordan Hermann and Baartman claimed his second, removing Muthusamy for a one-run with a team total of 33-6.
Baartman added two more wickets to his tally when he removed Parnell (9) and Eathan Bosch (1) while Jansen removed Verreynne (8) and Patrick Kruger claimed his first SA20 wicket with the dismissal of Adil Rashid for four runs, wrapping up the innings with 6.3 overs to spare.
The score of 52 all out easily beats the tally put up by Durban’s Super Giants, who scored 80 all out against Joburg Super Kings in last year’s edition.
Baartman finished with 4-12 from his four overs, while Dan Worrall, Marco Jansen, and Patrick Kruger recorded figures of 3-22, 2-11, and 1/5 from a combined 10.3 overs.
