Former public protector Prof Thuli Madonsela has been appointed as a member of the International Council of Arbitration for Sport (ICAS) in Lausanne, Switzerland.
“Madonsela was appointed to ICAS by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for the remainder of the 2023-2026 term to fill the vacancy left in its quota after the passing of Justice Yvonne Mokgoro,” the Swiss foundation said in a statement on Friday.
Created in 1994, ICAS comprises 22 members with legal backgrounds and manages the administration and finances of the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
The CAS is an independent institution based in Lausanne which was created to resolve sports-related disputes through arbitration or mediation. The jurisdiction of CAS is recognised by all Olympic sports federations and many non-Olympic federations. The organisation registers around 900 cases each year.
Madonsela is an advocate and professor of law, holds a chair in social justice at Stellenbosch University since January 2018. She served as the Public Protector of South Africa from 19 October 2009 to 14 October 2016.
