Mamelodi Sundowns beat Stellenbosch FC 2-1 in the semi-final of the Nedbank Cup at Danie Craven Stadium on Sunday afternoon to set up a final date against rivals Orlando Pirates.

Sundowns dominated the early stages, and after 11 minutes, Khuliso Mudau opened the scoring with a tight-angle strike at the near post.

The home team showed determination to get back into the game, but their momentum was disrupted when linesman Zakhele Siwela suffered a hamstring injury, resulting in a brief stoppage for treatment and eventual substitution. Despite the interruption, Sundowns went on to maintain control and entered halftime with a 1-0 lead.

Despite the Cape Winelands having chances to level the score in the second half, substitute Thembinkosi Lorch made their task even harder by extending Sundowns’ lead in the 74th minute.

Shortly after, Mudau was brought down in the box by Qobolwakhe Sibande, prompting the referee to award a penalty. Peter Shalulile stepped up to take it but unfortunately sent the ball over the crossbar. This appeared to turn things around for Stellies as Genino Palace slotted the ball into the back of the net in the 81st minute, providing a glimmer of hope for the home side.

However, at the sound of the final whistle, Sundowns successfully maintained their lead for a 2-1 victory, securing their advancement to the Nedbank Cup final.
