The African National Congress (ANC) Gauteng Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) appeared before the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) in Boksburg.
Fullview learnt that it is likely to disband the PEC as punishment for the poor performance of the province in last national and provincial elections.
Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) PECs were earmarked for dissolution by Luthuli House, but the KZN plight was shelved last week.
The ANC top brass was dissatisfied with the electoral outcomes in Gauteng and KZN where it received 34.76% in the May elections down from 50.19% in 2019 and 17% down from 54.2% respectively.
The ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula said the two provinces will know whether they will be dissolved or not next year after January 8.
Mbalula spoke to journalists following the National Working Committee (NWC) meeting with the Gauteng Provincial Committee (PEC) in Boksburg on Monday.
Disbandment is a total overhaul, we remove the current structure and replace it. Or it can be that we are fine with the status quo and the current people are fit for the task with minor tweaks here and there or we can bring in new people to provide support to the current structure…
Although he declined to clarify whether the provincial executive committees (PECs) of KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng were scheduled to be dissolved, Mbalula was clear that difficult choices had to be made in both provinces.
The secretary-general said the decision-making process will analyse the three options and their associated risks, and the NWC will present a comprehensive report to officials and his office.
“We have made it very clear to them that nobody discusses matters pertaining to Gauteng. If there’s anything that needs to be communicated to the public, that will be done by the secretary-general, “he said.
The decision to delay the decision on the PECs of the two provinces until January due to insufficient time before the December 16 deadline.
This decision coincides with two consecutive state visits and the South African Communist Party’s (SACP) national congress.
