The stage is set for a thrilling Betway SA20 Season 3 final as defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape take on first-time finalists MI Cape Town at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday, February 8, at 17:30.
Sunrisers Eastern Cape Eye Historic Three-Peat
Sunrisers Eastern Cape continued their dominance in the competition by securing a spot in their third consecutive final. Their emphatic eight-wicket victory over the Paarl Royals in Qualifier 2 reaffirmed their championship credentials, with Tony de Zorzi and Jordan Hermann delivering standout performances.
De Zorzi, a late addition to the squad as a replacement for the injured Patrick Kruger, played an innings to remember, smashing a blistering 78 off 49 balls (11×4, 2×6). He formed a formidable 111-run second-wicket stand with Hermann, who remained unbeaten on 69 off 48 balls (4×4, 4×6), guiding the Sunrisers to chase down the Royals’ 175/4 with ease.
“It’s very, very cool. It hasn’t set in yet. I am really grateful to Aiden (Markram) for giving me this opportunity,” De Zorzi said after his match-winning knock.
Captain Aiden Markram, who has now led the Sunrisers to all three of their final appearances, lauded his team’s performance. “Another good night. We are getting there, happy to restrict them. Good to see guys firing, all coming into place now. It’s a big lift for the guys. It’s nice for them to experience this on such a big stage.”
The Sunrisers will rely heavily on Markram’s leadership and all-round brilliance, as he has been in destructive form with the bat, particularly in high-pressure knockout matches, while also contributing with his spin bowling.
MI Cape Town Chase Maiden Title
MI Cape Town, on the other hand, secured their first-ever final berth with a clinical 39-run win over the Royals in Qualifier 1 at St George’s Park. Under the guidance of coach Robin Peterson, they dominated in all departments, showcasing their depth and firepower.
Batting first, MI Cape Town set a daunting 199/4, thanks to a blistering start by Ryan Rickelton (44 off 27 balls) and Rassie van der Dussen (40 off 32). Dewald Brevis (44* off 30) and Delano Potgieter (32* off 17) provided the late fireworks, ensuring a commanding total.
Their bowlers then took control, with Kagiso Rabada striking early and captain Rashid Khan making history by becoming T20 cricket’s highest-ever wicket-taker, surpassing Dwayne Bravo. Rashid dismissed Royals all-rounder Dunith Wellalage with a trademark delivery, further cementing his status as one of the game’s greatest match-winners.
