The ANC Member of Parliament (MP), Sibusiso Kula is expected to appear at Orkney Magistrate’s Court after he was arrested on Friday in connection with the death of his wife, Jennifer Motlhomi (31).
It is understood the alleged murder of his wife took place in November 2022.
The national police spokesperson, Brig Athlenda Mathe said: “The North West Police have arrested a man in Klerksdorp for the alleged murder of his wife. The incident happened on 27 November 2022 at the home of the suspect in Kanana Township.
“The suspect is facing a charge of murder and will appear before the Orkney Magistrate’s Court on Monday.”
The ANCWL in North West said it is paralyzed with shock following the arrest of Kula.
The ANCWL Provincial Task Team (PTT) Convenor, Bitsa Lenkopane, says the murder is a painful reminder of the prevalence of gender-based violence and femicide that many women and children still face.
“The deceased was stabbed to death in her home on 27 November 2022. On Friday, 20 January 2023, her husband was arrested for the gruesome murder.The accused will be appearing in court on Monday, 23 January 2023 at 08:00 am Orkney Magistrate’s Court, North West,” Lenkopane adds.
“Motlhomi was a vibrant young woman, who spent her entire life participating and leading the struggle structures of the youth and students in the ANC,” she said.
Lenkopane said, Motlhomi’s activism comes from the Bojanala Platinum region, where she led the Congress of South African Students (COSAS) from that region and later in the province. According to reports, Motlhomi was also actively involved in the Young Women activities in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda region before her untimely death.
The deceased shared a series of messages about gender-based violence before her death.
In a Facebook post she allegedly mentioned that, “GBV is real, if I wake up killed or any of my family members, please don’t look far.”
While ANC parliamentary chief whip Pemmy Majodina said they were aware of the allegation levelled against the MP, she said the caucus would allow the law to take its course.
She said, “we are aware of all the allegations. There is nothing more I can say but let the law take its course.
Majodina said they would decide on a course of action once the he had appeared in court.
