Kwazulu-Natal (KZN) Department of Cooperative Affairs and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) says more bodies have been recovered after heavy rainfall in Lamontville, South of Durban last night.
Cogta’s Senzelwe Mzila has confirmed more bodies have been recovered following the floods that hit Lamontville.
Two more bodies have washed up at Brighton and Anstey’s beaches on the Bluff. Earlier five bodies who were reported missing, were recovered.
Mzali said KwaZulu-Natal remains one of the provinces in South Africa’s most flood-prone provinces with recurring floods causing widespread devastation leading to losses in billions.
According to Mzila since December 2025, the province has suffered R3 billion worth of damages.
He said the province is partnering with several social partners as well as academic institutions to ensure that the province is climate resilient.
Meanwhile, flood survivors recounted the terrifying ordeal, saying the rain began around 9pm and by 11 pm on Tuesday night water had already started flooding their homes.
The SA Weather Service issued a level 2 weather warning, indicating the possibility of further rainfall for Wednesday.
Co-operative governance and traditional affairs MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi urged residents in low-lying areas to seek shelter on higher ground. The risk of flooding remains high, particularly in vulnerable areas.
