Little Ashford preschool group has announced the establishment of a legacy project in memory of Kganya Mokhele, who tragically lost his life in a classroom incident in 2023.
Mokhele died at Little Ashford Preschool in Bedfordview, Ekurhuleni, on March 7, 2024.
A bookshelf allegedly fell on him in one of the classrooms during snack time when he reached for a toy on the top shelf.
Mokhele was believed to have sustained head injuries and was moved to another classroom before paramedics arrived at the school.
To perpetuate Kganya’s memory, the school has launched the Kganya Mokhele Scholarship in his honour, commencing 1 June 2025.
Little Ashford will offer five scholarships per year over five years, valued at R100 000 each.
The scholarships, totalling 25, will be awarded to qualifying children, aged between one and five years.
The scholarships will be formally presented by the Mokhele family at a special ceremony held annually – while making a lasting difference in the lives of children within Little Ashford’s school community.
“We have worked closely with Little Ashford to identify an initiative that would be meaningful and which will serve to perpetuate Kganya’s memory which will continue through the gift of education,” says Professor Maurice Radebe (family representative). “We will always hold Kganya close in our hearts and in this way, his spirit will endure.”
