Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader, Julius Malema has warned that the country will be plunged into darkness in the next two weeks because there will a total grid collapse.

Malema briefed the media on Monday at the party’s Marshalltown headquarters following the party’s Central Command Team Meeting.

The CCT discussed, among other matters, the ongoing and escalating electricity blackouts plaguing South Africa.

He painted a dark picture of the country’s power crisis, arguing that the appointment of Kgosientsho Ramokgopa as the minister of electricity will not bring any change.

Malema doesn’t believe Ramokgopa is capable of stabilising the grid and bringing an end to load shedding.

“We don’t support anything of the minister of electricity, he never said anything that we said here – he will never come close to thinking like this.

“Sputla is corrupt – he collapsed the ANC leadership in Tshwane. It’s him, Tshwane to be where it is today it’s Sputla. South Africans you are so gullible, so gullible, that a person collapses a municipality and you say he can restore such a complex matter as electricity.

“He himself confessed that he doesn’t know anything, he is relying on those people that have been there failing us,” said Malema.

Following his appointment, Ramokgopa visited all 14 Eskom power stations.

He lamented the closure of some of Eskom’s coal power stations, labelling the decision as “premature”.

Malema said Eskom is talking about Stages 10 to 16 just to make the situation sounds “nice” when the reality is that it’s darkness that’s around the corner.

A total grid collapse is likely if the power utility sees several, if not all it’s power stations go down at the same time.

This would result in a total blackout which would be difficult to repair and get the system back up and running because there won’t be electricity to make repairs.

Malema called for the return of former Eskom executives, Brian Molefe and Matshela Koko, who he believed were being “unfairly and irrationally persecuted in the name of so-called state capture”.

“Brian must come back. Koko must come back so is all those Indian, Coloured and White engineers [because] we are in a crisis. If they love South Africa, they must not ask for payment… they must come and rescue South Africa,” he continued.

“I’m not saying Brian or anyone’s charges must be dropped. They have not been found guilty. I’m not saying go fetch them from jail… they are at home.”
