The South African Police Service (SAPS) on Monday confirmed one of the investigators in the Thabo Bester prison escape case has died.
Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe confirmed on Monday afternoon, saying the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death remain a subject of investigation.
The convicted rapist and murderer escaped from the maximum-security prison in May last year by faking his own death and was rearrested in Tanzania earlier this month.
He was assisted by employees at the prison and his accomplice Dr Nandipa Magudumana.
So far, eight suspects have been arrested in relation to the escape and six of the suspects are current and former G4S employees.
Mathe says the SAPS management wishes not to discuss the details of his death at this early stage.
However Fullview understands from sources close to the investigation that he had shot himself.
The National Commissioner of the SAPS, General Fannie Masemola has described the member as a hardworking, loyal and dedicated detective with 31 years of service.
“Over the years he has proven himself to be a highly skilled detective with a wealth of experience and knowledge in the detective environment.
Meanwhile ActionSA says the death of the investigating officer should be investigated by the Police Minister, Bheki Cele, together with the Police Commissioner, Masemola, so that South Africans can satisfy themselves that there was no foul play afoot appreciating the Hollywood-type twists and turns this saga has already taken.
If, indeed, foul play is detected, the state has a duty to ensure that other investigators and witnesses do not fall prey to the same fate as this officer, the party said in a statement.
