Johannesburg metro police spokesperson Xolani Fihla has urged motorists to use alternative routes due to Monday morning’s protests in Diepkloof, Soweto.
Angry community members took to the streets on Monday morning, barricading roads with burning tyres and rocks.
Residents from the hostel took to the streets in protest for the third time in a month to demand access to water, electricity and housing.
During the protest some members of the community looted a truck transporting alcohol at the N12 west near the Diepkloof Interchange.
Fihla says passing vehicles were also being stoned.
“We have received reports of passing vehicles being stoned and earlier this morning a truck transporting alcohol was looted and the driver sustained slight injuries. The truck is still positioned at the N12 west before the Diepkloof interchange where it was looted and officers are awaiting its removal.
“Officers had to use rubber bullets to disperse the protesting crowds and the situation in the area remains tense with Marthinus Smuts Drive, next to the hostel entrance, barricaded off with burning tyres and rocks,” he said.
“A case of public violence has been opened at Diepkloof SAPS. No arrests have been made so far. Motorists are urged to excerise extreme caution when travelling in that area.”
Fihla said they will continue monitoring the situation in the area and that Chris Hani Road would remain closed between Collander Road and the N12 exit during the protests.
Reporters also came under fire, with SABC journalists showing footage of damage done to their car. Dwellers apparently threw rocks at the cars during their clash with police officers.
