The trial of the five men accused of killing Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates captain, Senzo Meyiwa, is set to resume following months of delays, largely attributed to changes in legal representation and preparation time.
Proceedings resumed in the High Court in Pretoria on Monday, 05 May, only to be postponed until May 19th.
Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng announced the postponement to allow for further cross-examination of Brigadier Bongani Gininda, the lead investigating officer in the high-profile murder case.
This latest delay follows a period of disruption, stemming from the recent passing of defence advocate Thulani Mngomezulu.
Mngomezulu, who represented accused Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, tragically succumbed to illness on December 10, 2024.
In the wake of this loss, advocate Charles Mnisi, a fellow member of the defense team, has stepped forward to represent Sibiya. However, during proceedings last month, after a nearly three-month recess.
On Monday, Mnisi assured the court that he will be able to proceed on May 19.
The five accused men – Sibiya, Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa, and Sifisokuhle Nkani Ntuli – face charges of murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
The trial, which began in 2022, has been marked by numerous delays and controversies.
Meyiwa was killed on October 26, 2014, while in the company of his then girlfriend and the mother of his child, Kelly Khumalo, in Vosloorus.
