A generator has exploded and caught fire at the Economic and Management Science building in main campus of the University of Pretoria in Tshwane
The blaze led to the evacuation of the Economic and Management Sciences department and surrounding buildings.
Tshwane emergency services spokesperson Charles Mabaso says a fire engine and a ladder truck were dispatched to the scene.
No injuries have been reported.
Mabaso says they also haven’t picked up any structural damage to the buildings.
“The cause of the explosion and fire has not yet been determined. The impact of the loss of one of the generators has not yet been communicated by the university authorities.”
The university’s spokesperson Rikus Delport says academic activities on campus continue as normal.
The power to the affected area of the campus has been shut off, but there is no indication of when it will return.
Last month, a transformer inside the Koedoespoort Substation went up in flames, sending a thick black cloud into the sky and leaving hundreds of residents without power.
The incident impacted a nearby transformer and resulted in power outages across several regions of the City of Tshwane.
