The family of Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) founder Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi says he is still in hospital receiving much-needed medical attention.

In a statement on Wednesday morning, the family said, Buthelezi underwent a procedure for back pain management.

Family spokesperson Bhekuyise Buthelezi says well-wishers are discouraged from visiting the hospital.

“He has since developed a complication and therefore remains in hospital at this stage to receive the necessary care. The duration of his hospital stay will depend on how fast his body can recover from the complication.”

“We appeal to the nation to allow time for his recovery and rest. Knowing the concern that is felt by the nation, we will continue to provide periodic updates.”

“On behalf of uMntwana waKwaPhindangene and the family, we wish to convey deepest appreciation for the many prayers, messages of support, well-wishes and love that have been received.”

The statement follows media reports on Tuesday evening that Buthelezi’s condition has worsened as he is unable to speak and he has since been taken into an intensive care unit (ICU).

Buthelezi, who is also the Traditional Prime Minister to the AmaZulu Nation, will be celebrating his 95th birthday later this month.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has conveyed his well wishes to the Zulu traditional Prime Minister, Prince Buthelezi.

In a statement, the President wished a speedy recovery to Prince Buthelezi.

Ramaphosa has communicated with the Buthelezi family and was briefed about Prince Buthelezi’s health condition.

“The President has expressed his well wishes and conveyed that his heartfelt prayers are with Prince Buthelezi and the family,” the statement read.
