The police in North West are investigating a case of culpable homicide after five people were killed when two vehicles collided.
The two cars crashed on the Riviera Park bridge next to the rugby stadium, early hours of the morning.
North West Department of Transport spokesperson Oshebeng Keonyaditse said both vehicles were travelling towards Mahikeng CBD at the time of the crash.
“It appears one vehicle was overtaking the other when bumping on its driver’s side. Three people were declared deceased at the scene of the accident, whilst the other two passed on at the hospital.
“The deceased include one of the drivers and the other two are hospitalised with serious injuries,” he said.
A case of culpable homicide is being investigated.
In a separate incident, four people have been killed in a head-on collision between a car and a bakkie in Ermelo.
The two vehicles collided on Lothair Road on Monday, killing two women, a man, and a two-year-old child.
ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring says the driver of the bakkie sustained minor injuries.
“ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene at 9am to find the two wrecked vehicles on the side of the road, the light motor vehicle lying on its roof. Upon closer inspection, medics found five patients trapped inside the overturned vehicle.
“Another woman in her 30s was found with several injuries and was in critical injuries. The woman was treated and provided with advanced life support interventions before she was transported to Ermelo provincial hospital for urgent care.
“The details surrounding this incident are unknown, but local authorities were on the scene for further investigations,” Meiring added.
