At least eight people were killed in the early hours of Sunday when a minibus collided with a sedan in Limpopo province.
The accident occurred on the N1 at Botlokwa in Limpopo.
It is reported that the driver of the BMW crossed over into the oncoming traffic lane and collided head-on with the Toyota Quantum.
The precise cause of the crash is still under investigation. The scene was attended to by SAPS Polokwane Accident Response Team.
“The fatal accident includes two children, two females, and four males, of which two are of drivers of the BMW and the taxi,” said the Limpopo Transport MEC Florence Radzilani’s spokesperson, Vongani Chauke.
“One passenger in a life-threatening condition, seven with serious injuries and four with minor injuries. MEC Radzilani send messages of condolences to the bereaved families.”
The latest deadly crash came a week after 22 mine workers died when their bus collided with a heavy-duty truck before bursting into flames in Musina.
Radzilani has cautioned motorists to be extra careful during the long weekend.
She also urged all law enforcement to ensure that people abide by the rules of the road.
“Our people in the province should be very careful while traveling to their different destinations, we continue to lose lives on our roads and all of us should be concerned and promote road safety during our journeys.”
South Africa grapples with a high number of road accidents each year despite various efforts to address the issue.
According to the country’s Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), 12,436 people were killed on the country’s roads between January 2022 and December of the same year.
