In just one week, the world of cricket will pause as the hallowed turf of Lord’s prepares to crown the new kings of Test cricket. The ICC World Test Championship Final 2025 is upon us, and it’s shaping up to be a battle for the ages.
From 11 June, the defending champions Australia will take on a resurgent South Africa in the third WTC Final, with both sides having charted dominant paths to the grand stage. It’s a heavyweight contest between two giants of the game, steeped in history, pride, and purpose.
The Proteas have been a revelation throughout the 2023–25 WTC cycle. Finishing top of the standings with a remarkable 69.44% of points secured, they’ve won eight of their 12 matches and reminded the world of their enduring strength in the longest format. With pace, precision, and purpose, South Africa have emerged as a complete Test unit, and now, they stand a few days away from a shot at history.
Australia, under Andrew McDonald, were the only unbeaten side in this WTC cycle. They finished just behind South Africa on 67.54% and would’ve topped the table had it not been for a 10-point penalty for a slow over-rate.
They’ve won 13 out of 19 Tests and are looking to retain the title they won so convincingly in 2023. With world-class firepower and proven big-match pedigree, Australia will be hungry to defend their crown.
First launched in 2019, the ICC World Test Championship was designed to bring structure and stakes to the longest format. With points up for grabs in every match across three home and three away series per team, the WTC has added drama, clarity, and consequence to each contest. The top two sides qualify for the final, a winner-takes-all battle to be crowned the best in the world.
