The British & Irish Lions will set off for Australia on the back of a 28-24 defeat by Argentina in their warm-up test in Dublin on Friday.
Just as they did when they last met in a 25-25 draw before the 2005 tour, the Pumas had the Lions on the ropes early thanks to tries from Ignacio Mendy and Tomas Albornoz either side of a Bundee Aki effort that gave them a deserved 21-10 halftime lead.
The Lions, playing without almost half of their panel due to recent club commitments and injury, were a different animal early in the second half and regained the lead after a penalty try and another home crowd score, this time for Tadhg Beirne.
But Santiago Carreras put Argentina back in front against the run of play with another great team try and the error-strewn Lions could not reply again to leave themselves five more games, all in Australia, to set things right before the first test against the Wallabies on July 19.
“We made it a tough game,” said head coach Andy Farrell, who was taking charge of his first Lions game.
“The first and appropriate thing to say is congratulations to Argentina, they thoroughly deserved to win. They capitalised very well on quite a few errors from us, so congratulations and I’m sure that’s a big moment in Argentina’s history.”
“You can try and throw it all around and say we had plenty of opportunities and we should have done better, but the story of the game is we compounded too many errors and weren’t able to put the pace on the game that we wanted to because of that,” added Farrell.
There are no excuses. We should have been better today but as with other areas of the game, we’ll learn and get better together.”
