The South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) in KwaZulu-Natal says it is not concerned about its provincial chairperson Jacob Zuma’s decision to vote for the Umkhonto WeSizwe party, however, the organisation would continue to support and endorse the African National Congress (ANC) in the 2024 election campaign.
SANCO briefed the media in Durban, in response to Zuma’s decision not to campaign and vote for the ANC for the 2024 general elections.
Zuma announced that he will instead support the newly registered uMkhonto WeSizwe party.
SANCO secretary Sizwe Cele says they won’t be getting involved in the matter.
He says the former president’s decision not to vote for the ANC does not affect his role as their chairperson.
“President Jacob Zuma occupied the highest office in the ANC as he was its president.”
“This analysis clearly says to us as SANCO in all intense and purposes president Zuma is an ANC person and today he is at loggerheads with his own political party. “
“The ANC’s national office itself, which is the only ANC structure which has a constitutional mandate to deal with Zuma has not said anything of significant about this matter.”
uMkhonto WeSizwe party was among the hosts of political parties that were registered between June 29, and September 18 to contest the 2024 national elections.
It has already been registered with the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC).
The party, which is supported by Zuma, is not part of the ANC and has no links to the ruling party.
Meanwhile the South African Communist Party (SACP) in KwaZulu-Natal is calling on the ANC to engage disgruntled members who are leaving the party.
The party said Zuma’s decision to endorse the uMkhonto WeSizwe Party came as a shock and will hurt.
